Coconut Milk Guide

Updated: Apr 8, 2021

Interested in switching to a non-dairy milk replacement? This post will be your guide to all things coconut milk!

So, What Is Coconut Milk?

Coconut milk comes from the coconut fruit’s fatty, white meat, while coconut water is the liquid inside a coconut. Being packed with medium-chain triglycerides (MCT's), and being rich in heart-healthy saturated fats and a lipid called lauric acid (which boosts your immune system), it is safe to say that this creamy and dreamy milk exceeds all expectations taste and health-wise.

What To Use It For?

Coconut milk is a useful and delicious ingredient if you are lactose intolerant, or if you're simply just looking to add a creamy, rich coconut flavor to recipes.

Use it for:

  • Smoothies - Use coconut milk in any smoothie recipe.

  • Cereal - Try replacing dairy milk with coconut milk for a tasty flavor-combo.

  • Oatmeal - Use coconut milk as the liquid in oatmeal for a fat-fueling replacement. Try this Grain-Free Chocolate N'Oatmeal for inspiration!

  • Curries - Coconut milk is the tastiest in a savory dish such as curry. Try this delicious Thai Curry Veggie & Shrimp dish for inspiration.

  • Soups - Substitute full-fat coconut milk as a base for any creamy soup--you won't regret it!

Why Should You Make Your Own Coconut Milk?

There are many reasons why making things from scratch is best! Three main reasons being 1) it's healthier for you and your family, 2) it's better for the budget, and 3) it is a genuinely fun activity to get in to trying. Let's dive into these listed reasons a bit more.

Store bought coconut milk usually contains added thickeners, preservatives, and sweeteners. You can easily avoid all of this by making your own at-home. You can also avoid the nasty chemical BPA (which is found in aluminum and in some plastic) by making your own--it's really a win-win situation to create it from scratch!

So, it's healthier--what a bonus! But, did you know it is also cheaper to make it yourself? In fact, it costs about half as much to make coconut milk at home as it does to buy a pre-made carton of coconut milk. Definitely worth trying!

And lastly, it's a fun and rewarding experience to create something with your own hands--especially when keeping those two points above in mind! There really is nothing more satisfying than creating something delicious for you and others to enjoy, and homemade coconut milk is an easy and fun place to start.
